Objects of Virtu

A group of mourning jewellery relating to the Chaloner family of Kingsfort County Meath, Ireland, comprising a gold and white enamelled ring, the shank detailed ‘Thos Chaloner Obt 16 Jany 1771 Aet 20’, glazed with a woven hair locket compartment, unmarked, ring size approx G1/2, an oval watercolour portrait miniature on ivory of a gentleman, mounted to a clasp later converted for wear as a pendant, unmarked, 3.3cm x 2.8cm, excluding mount, with paper label detailed ‘Revd Chas Betty’, another oval watercolour portrait miniature on ivory of a gentleman, mounted to a gilt metal clasp, 3.3cm x 2.7cm excluding mount, with paper label detailed ‘John Chaloner Esq’, both Circle of Gustavus Hamilton (1739-1775), a gilt metal mounted woven hairwork bracelet on a snap clasp, and a George III shilling 1787, gilded and pierced with a hole, all later displayed in a 19th century fitted case. Note: a non-transferrable ivory exemption certificate has been granted for the sale of this item.

A late 19th century French ormolu and Limoges enamel jewellery casket of square form, the hinged lid inset with a circular enamel panel, painted with a bust portrait of a Bohemian maiden wearing a gilt and purple dress with a star headdress, gilt 'LD' monogram to edge, within a cast laurel wreath surround, cornered with applied scrolling foliage, within a cast stiff leaf border, the sides with a trellis ground and ribbon twist base, height 11.5cm, width 19cm.

An early 20th century Limoges enamel tondo plaque, finely painted with a portrait of a young lady, initialled in gilt 'A.P', diameter 5cm, mounted within a cast metal frame with torch and ribbon surmount.

An early 19th century Tunbridge ware rectangular panel, decorated with a coloured engraving of 'The Chain Pier & Marine Parade Brighton', 13cm x 18.5cm (formerly the lid of the box).

A group of late Victorian miniature cranberry glassware, including ewers, teapot, vases and plates, height of tallest 4.5cm, all within a glass display dome with ebonized base.

A W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co fountain pen with black and cream marbled body, length 14cm, together with a black Sheaffer fountain pen.

A pair of George III white metal shoe buckles, width 6cm, a paste set shoe buckle and three other buckles.

A 19th century Italian micromosaic panel depicting a temple, width 3cm, two other micromosaic panels, a pietre dure inlaid panel of a butterfly and a small group of enamel and other plaques.

An interesting Royal related presentation plaque, engraved 'Presented to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales by The Crosse Club of Montreal during his visit to Canada, August 1860', shaped to be mounted to a lacrosse stick, length 4.7cm.

A late Victorian novelty porcelain scent bottle in the form of a walnut, bearing printed 'Rd No. 26170', with silver screw-off lid, London 1885, length 5.5cm.

A 19th century Stobwasser papier-mâché circular snuff box, the lid painted with a lady holding a basket of grapes on her head, the interior detailed in red 'Marie' and 'Stobwasser's Fabrik Braunochweig', diameter 9.9cm.

Circle of George Perfect Harding - a 19th century half-length portrait of Charles II, watercolour on paper, 8cm x 6.5cm, framed.

A 19th century Sterzing carved horn snuff box, South Tyrol, engraved with name 'Andre Hober' and with further band of script, the base with full-length portrait of a man, diameter 5.5cm.

A Continental engraved brass pilgrim's cross or Caravaca cross, possibly 18th century Spanish, both sides finely engraved, height 13.4cm.

A late 19th century Blue John (Derbyshire fluorspar) turned goblet, height 12.4cm (restoration).

A mid-20th century Australian gold model of a koala bear by S.A. Schagen, detailed 'S.A. Schagen 18ct' to rear, mounted on a pink and black variegated stone plinth, total weight 1481g, total height 9.8cm, cased, the hinged lid interior detailed 'Proud's Jewellers S.A. Schagen Sydney'. Note: the figure has been XRF Analyzer tested, which confirmed the figure is 18ct gold.

An impressive mid-20th century Australian varicoloured gold figure group, titled 'Satin Bower-Birds Ptilonorhynchus violaceus', by S.A. Schagen, finely modelled with a courtship display of the male and female birds, one with wings spread dancing, the other standing in the nest or bower, on a bed of sticks, between them scattered shells, opals, agates and two platinum and sapphire feathers, each bird stamped 'S.A. Schagen 20ct 1961', all raised on a green stone plinth, gold nuts to underside detailed '18ct', height 18cm, width 52.5cm, cased, the hinged lid interior detailed 'Proud's Jewellers S.A. Schagen'. Note: the figure group has been XRF Analyzer tested, which confirmed the two birds are 20ct gold, while the nest, stick bed and majority of other components test as 18ct gold.

An early 20th century darkly patinated bronze walking cane handle, cast as a parrot on a perch, length 13cm.
