Militaria, Medals and Awards

Two 17th century cannonballs and a lead cannonball, thought to be late medieval or Tudor period. Note: the two 17th century cannonballs were discovered by Mr Ralph Butcher at Barnham Court, West Sussex, in the late 1980s. He was ditch-cleaning when his spade hit something hard and, on further exploration, he discovered a hoard of thirteen cannonballs, all of the same size. The owner of the property, Mr John Force, kept eleven of them and Ralph Butcher took two. It is thought that the balls were deposited during the English Civil War. All three cannonballs have since been passed to the current owners.

A Second World War period silk escape map, one side detailed with 'Sheet C' showing Holland, Belgium (except West Coast), France (North East) and Germany (West & Central), the other with 'Sheet D' showing France (South East), German (South West), Switzerland (except South East) and Belgium and German (New Frontier), 72cm x 72cm (numerous creases).

A collection of mainly military ephemera relating to Edwin Sandys Wason (1842-80), including various commissions regarding his journey in the 33rd Regiment of Foot, various photographs and hand-written letters, including a letter of sympathy after his death in 1880, and a page of South-east Asian religious text, probably brought back from a campaign.

A collection of RAF-related militaria and ephemera belonging to Harold Gordon Allen, Royal Canadian Air Force, No. J 87339, including a scrap album containing a large collection of photographs, newspaper cutting and other ephemera relating to his time in service, Service Pay Book, RAF side cap, post-war dress jacket and other items. Note: Harold Allen served with No. 617 Squadron (Dambusters) and took part in Operation Catechism as a bomb-aimer on board modified Lancaster bomber ME562 (KC-K). Operation Catechism resulted in the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz on 12th November 1944.

A group of five Second World War and later awards, comprising 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, War Medal, Naval General Service Medal, George VI issue, with bar 'Palestine 1945-48' to 'P/KX.91 300 G.E.Ruff. P.O.S. M. R.N.', and Elizabeth II Royal Naval Reserve Long Service Medal to 'KX 91300 G.E.Ruff. PO.B. 28879 P.O.M.(E).R.F.R.', mounted on a display board with a post-1952 Royal Navy cloth badge, framed, with various paperwork, including Certificate of Service and Conduct Record Sheet.

A First World War period bronze memorial plaque, detailed 'John Charles Scott', Woolwich Arsenal mark to the back, within original wax card case of issue with Buckingham Palace memorial slip.

A rare late Victorian Hertfordshire Regiment officer's plumed helmet, the brass-mounted silver-plated skull body with applied pressed metal badge, horse-hair plume, part leather fitted interior and pressed metal ring-mounted leather chinstrap, height 40cm.

A collection of 1950s Westminster Bank Limited cheques relating to George Hinton & Sons Ltd, West of England Gun Works, printed in red on salmon pink paper with ink-written transactions. Provenance: the property of a Hampshire private collector.

An extensive collection of 20th century overseas dog licences in ticket and tag form, including Onchon, Isle of Man, Australia, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Netherlands, Cyprus, Malta and Guernsey, with printed and personalized details, all within two folders. Provenance: the property of a Hampshire private collector.

A large collection of mostly later 20th century shooting related ephemera, catalogues and literature, including WAGBI, Game Services and Shire Guides, together with a small group of Hampshire estate maps. Provenance: the property of a Hampshire private collector.

A group of five limited edition colour prints of Second World War aviation interest, comprising four by Robert Taylor - 'Tommy Leader', 'Hurricane Force', 'Eagle Attack' and 'Summer Victory', and one by Frank Wooton - 'The Straggler', all with signatures of various RAF and Luftwaffe pilots, including Peter Townsend, Geoffrey Page, Johnnie Johnson and Brian Kingcome, all unframed.
