A Japanese export lacquer inlaid Nanban cabinet, Momoyama period (1568-1600), of rectangular form, the interior fitted with a symmetrical arrangement of eight drawers of various sizes, each front with black and gilt and finely inlaid mother-of-pearl chequer board design, concealed behind a fall flap, the front, top and sides finely worked in black and gilt and inlaid in mother-of-pearl with central panels of birds and blossoming branches, reserved against a mother-of-pearl ground, the top and front with a surround of mon, applied gilt copper locking plate, corner mounts and drop handles to sides, height 31.5cm, width 44cm, depth 30.5cm (some faults). Note: this Japanese cabinet belongs to a category of goods known as Nanban (literally 'Southern Barbarians), which were produced in the late 16th and early 17th centuries for trade with Portugal and other European countries.
