An impressive Japanese carved and stained ivory elephant tusk okimono, Meiji period, one side finely carved in relief with four figural scenes, divided by banana plant, pine and rocks, comprising warriors watching as a man sleeps in a pavilion, warriors reading from a scroll, sages and attendant boys taking refreshment and a tiger creeping up on a group of four scholars, all beneath a canopy of clouds, the reverse carved in low relief with a scene of a seated musician playing a koto with watching attendants and dancing boys, beside a banana plant and three figures seated at a games board playing go, inset red lacquer four-character signature seal mark and incised and black stained inscription panel to one end, length 101cm.
