BIBLE, In English. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues: And with the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. Oxford: John Baskett, 1717-16. Folio (494 x 331mm.) Engraved additional title of Moses receiving the Law by C. Du-Bose, title in red and black with engraved vignette depicting Oxford churches by G. Vander Gucht, calendar in red and black, numerous engraved head and tail-pieces. (Additional title with marginal tears, images affected, tears to BC and O3, large tears to E6-F1, G3 with repair, Gg4 and Hh6 with tears, ZZ5 and last leaf are detached, A2-A4 of N.T. with large tears, several torn leaves with tipped-in manuscript overlays, G6 [with ‘Vinegar’] nearly detached, occasional spotting.) Contemporary calf (free endpapers detached, pastedowns torn, boards detached). Note: with the ‘Vinegar’ mistake in the headline above Luke XX. The Bible that contained so many errors that it became known as ‘A Basket-ful of Errors’. [Herbert 942A.]

[VIRGIL]. – Publius Virgilius MARO. Bucolica Georgica Et Aeneis. Rome: J. Zempel, 1763-1765. 3 vols., large paper copy, folio (414 x 292mm.) Titles in red and black, engraved portrait medallions to titles, half-titles to vols. 2 and 3, engraved frontispieces and dedications, engraved historiated initials and engraved illustrations and tailpieces, text in Latin with italicized translation in Italian, annotations and indices. (Lacking map in vol. 2 and leaf of script specimens, lacking half-title to vol. 1, heavy spotting to pp.64-65 of vol. 1, tear to last leaf of vol. 2, p.366, overall occasional spotting to vols. 1 and 2.) Contemporary calf to vols. 1 and 2, later half-calf over marbled paper-covered boards to vol.3 (vol. 1 covers detached, vol. 2 lacking lower cover and upper cover detached, worn). Provenance: John Pinney (armorial bookplates to front pastedowns of vol. 1 and 2) (3).

London: Hippolyte Bailliere, 1849. ‘Atlas’ volume [only], folio (367 x 267mm.) Title, 21 [of 28] lithographed plates in colour of human skeletons and anatomy, 2pp. letterpress text for each plate. (Lacking 7 plates, marginal spotting to plates, minor chipping to a few plates, lacking text for plates 24-28, plates and text disbound.) Original brown blind-stamped cloth (wear to spine ends). – And a further twenty-six volumes related to anatomy (including Cecil Burns’ and Robert J. Colenso’s ‘Living Anatomy’, 40 plates [loose, as issued], 1900, 4to, and Joseph Bonomi’s ‘The Proportions of the Human Figure’, 1880, 4to, and Hugh W. Armstead’s ‘The Artistic Anatomy of the Horse’, 1900, oblong 4to, and F.R. Yerbury and G.M. Ellwood’s ‘The Human Form and Its Use in Art’, 1924, 8vo, and a catalogue for J.H. Steward, Ltd., of ‘Surveying Drawing and Nautical Instruments’, 1928, 8vo) (27).
