Note: the signings are on the title-page and read 'To Jo and Flo, Enjoy the Cosmic Adventure! Lucy Hawking'. Next to Stephen Hawking's thumb-print are the words 'This is the right hand thumb-print of S.W. Hawking, verified by Viv Riches, nurse on duty, 1-12-07.'

Limited edition, this being number 101 of 212 copies signed by the author, 4to (236 x 151mm.) Illustrations and decorative ornaments by Eric Ravilious. (Minor spotting to f.f.e.p. and rear pastedown.) Original blue morocco-backed decorative paper-covered boards, gilt lettering to the spine, t.e.g. (slight sunning to the spine), contained within a blue morocco-backed clamshell box (slight fading). Note: includes a 2pp. a.l.s. by L.A. Strong to R.A. Addyer-Scott dated 1945, 'I don't feel there is anything in it that I don't stand by ten years later. This war has been a much clearer issue than the last, as I remember it'. This is one of three books that Ravilious illustrated for the Golden Cockerel Press. Provenance: R.A. Addyer-Scott (ink presentation inscription from the author on the f.f.e.p.).

Original blue morocco-backed decorative paper-covered boards bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt lettering to spine, t.e.g. (slight sunning to spine), glassine dust-jacket (torn, with loss). - And five further volumes published by or relating to the Golden Cockerel Press (including 'The Hundredth Story of A.E. Signed by the author in a presentation inscription, 4to (266 x 176mm.) 14 engraved plates from etchings by the author. (Spotting to plate margins.) Contemporary red diced morocco, gilt borders and lettering to spine (upper cover detached, fading, loss to spine ends). Note: scarce. Provenance: Charles Fellowes (ink inscribed to on the title page, bookplate to the front pastedown); F. Berenger Benger (bookplate of the artist to the f.f.e.p.).

Taylor, 1791. 4to (279 x 184mm.) 57 engraved plates numbered 1-70 (11 folding or double-page). (Light spotting to margins, browning, name inscribed to title, initial blank loose.) Contemporary calf (upper cover detached, old laminate repair, loss to spine ends). Provenance: William Mann (bookplate to the front pastedown).

DEARN, T.D.W. Sketches in Architecture; consisting of Original Designs for Cottages and Rural Dwellings, Suitable to Persons of Moderate Fortune, and For Convenient Retirement. London: J. Taylor at the Architectural Library, 1807. First edition, large 4to (329 x 239mm.) Title, description of plates, 20 engraved plates, including 15 in sepia aquatint. (Spotting to rear leaves and plate margins.) Contemporary half-calf (loss to spine ends, lower cover detached, rubbed). Note: in his preface, Thomas Dearn acknowledges the 'approbation' that was heaped upon him for the impracticality of his first series of architectural drawings published the year previously. In this volume he is offering designs that are 'beneficial to others rather than honourable to myself'.

ASTRONOMY. - F.K. McCLEAN. Report of the Solar Eclipse Expedition to Flint Island January 3rd, 1908. Bungay, Suffolk: Richard Clay & Sons, [1909.] 4to (307 x 248mm.) 18pp. of text, 15 plates. (Text and plate leaves disbound, browning, soiling to pastedowns.) Original brown cloth, gilt lettering to upper cover (heavy spotting to covers).

SMYTHIES, B.E. Birds of Burma. Rangoon: American Baptist Mission Press, 1940. First edition, 8vo (231 x 148mm.) 31 colour plates by A.M. Hughes, captioned tissue-guards, map to rear. (Mild toning, ink gift inscription on the f.f.e.p..) Original green cloth, gilt lettering to spine (slight rubbing to extremities, mark to upper cover). Note: rare in the first edition. According to Smythies's introduction to the second edition, most copies of the first edition, already limited to 1000, were bought by Europeans in Burma and when the Japanese invaded in 1942, they left the books behind. Smythies goes on to say that the Japanese then collected the books up and shipped them off to the library of the Royal Veterinary College in Tokyo, which was subsequently bombed.

(Spotting to preliminaries, toning.) Original maroon cloth, decorative blind-stamping to covers, gilt lettering to spine, g.e. - And eleven further volumes relating to Egypt (including W.H. Calligraphic title, advertisement, contents list, 42 engraved maps dated 1792, with contemporary outline colouring, alphabetical list of market towns with their market days shown, 1pp. publisher's advertisement to rear, inner pockets to front and rear. (Mild toning, slight browning to initial blanks.) [Bound with:] Daniel PATERSON. A New and Accurate Description of all the Direct and Principal Cross Roads in England and Wales. London: T.N. Longman, 1794. 1 double-page view of the roads of England and Wales, 1p. of contemporary handwritten list of 'Good Inns', 2pp. of pencil notes, 9 blank leaves to rear. 2 works in 1, 8vo (156 x 97mm.) (Occasional spotting, trimmed to margins.) Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, black morocco lettering piece to spine, bronze clasp and bosses (lacking 1 clasp), g.e. (rubbing to extremities).

ART DECO. - Christian ZERVOS (editor). Les Arts de la Maison. Paris: Albert Morancé, 1923-1926. 14 parts in 7 vols., 4to (272 x 224mm.) Comprising 239 loose plates after French art deco sketches, photographs and photogravures, many tinted and with pochoir hand-colouring, numerous text-leaves with illustrations. (Toning to plate margins, lacking 1 plate from volume III and 2 plates from volume IV, many text leaves uncut.) Original orange cloth portfolios, black lettering to upper covers and spines, black ties (some fading, rubbing to spine ends). Note: a scarce complete run of this bi-annual work containing art and designs by Raol Dufy, Frans Masereel, Le Corbusier, J.E. Ruhlmann, Maillol and Pierre Chareau. A compendium of French Art Deco design including interiors, furniture, fabric, glass-ware, porcelain, bookbinding (7).

SOUTH-EAST ASIA. - C.J. KLEINGROTHE. Malay Peninsula. [Medan, Sumatra:? Kleingrothe, 1907?] Oblong (351 x 447mm.) Title, map in colour, 53 loose plates of heliogravures based on photographs by C.J. Kleingrothe. (A corner crease to 1 plate, all 36 Malay states plates have a corner damp stain and marginal ink-stain, a tear with small loss to the title, lacking 8 plates from the 'Penang' series and 9 from the 'Singapore' series.) All contained within the original blue cloth portfolio, white lettering and mounted photographic illustration to the upper cover (some rubbing and damp-spotting). Note: rare. Charles Kleingrothe was a German-born photographer who established a studio Medan, Sumatra in 1899. A variety of images, including a mail-train, golf and race-courses and clubs, but also of tin and gold-mining and rubber plantations.

Limited edition, this being one of 350 copies, this out of series, numbered '0000' and signed by the artist, 4to (281 x 219mm.) 25 tipped-in colour plates, captioned tissue-guards. (Toning, mild spotting to the tissue-guards.) Original calf, gilt lettering and blind-stamped device to upper cover, t.e.g. (some rubbing to spine). Provenance: Geoffrey Sparrow (bookplate to the front pastedown, gift inscribed in ink on the f.f.e.p.). - And a related volume (Geoffrey Sparrow's 'The Crawley and Horsham Hunt', [1931], 4to) (2).
