GOLDEN COCKEREL. - [Eric RAVILIOUS] and L.A. STRONG. The Hansom Cab and the Pigeons. London: Ten Staple Inn, 1935. Limited edition, this being number 101 of 212 copies signed by the author, 4to (236 x 151mm.) Illustrations and decorative ornaments by Eric Ravilious. (Minor spotting to f.f.e.p. and rear pastedown.) Original blue morocco-backed decorative paper-covered boards, gilt lettering to the spine, t.e.g. (slight sunning to the spine), contained within a blue morocco-backed clamshell box (slight fading). Note: includes a 2pp. a.l.s. by L.A. Strong to R.A. Addyer-Scott dated 1945, 'I don't feel there is anything in it that I don't stand by ten years later. This war has been a much clearer issue than the last, as I remember it'. This is one of three books that Ravilious illustrated for the Golden Cockerel Press. Provenance: R.A. Addyer-Scott (ink presentation inscription from the author on the f.f.e.p.).

Title in red and black, dedication to Charles II, 5pp. table of 'benefactors', 24 engraved plates of coats-of-arms on 12 leaves, folding map of Great Britain, 44 double-page county maps, map of London by Hollar, 5 folding maps of South Wales, North Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Isle of Wight, separate title for 'An Alphabetical Account of the Nobility and Gentry' at Xx4. (Browning to margins, small closed tear to dedication, marginal insect-damage Dd4-Ll2, minor chipping to title.) 20th century brown morocco bound to style, decorative blind-tooling, red morocco lettering piece to spine (endpapers replaced, front and rear blanks added). (Mild toning, slight browning to initial blanks.) [Bound with:] Daniel PATERSON. A New and Accurate Description of all the Direct and Principal Cross Roads in England and Wales. London: T.N. Longman, 1794. 1 double-page view of the roads of England and Wales, 1p. of contemporary handwritten list of 'Good Inns', 2pp. of pencil notes, 9 blank leaves to rear. 2 works in 1, 8vo (156 x 97mm.) ART DECO. - Christian ZERVOS (editor). Les Arts de la Maison. Paris: Albert Morancé, 1923-1926. 14 parts in 7 vols., 4to (272 x 224mm.) Comprising 239 loose plates after French art deco sketches, photographs and photogravures, many tinted and with pochoir hand-colouring, numerous text-leaves with illustrations. (Toning to plate margins, lacking 1 plate from volume III and 2 plates from volume IV, many text leaves uncut.) Original orange cloth portfolios, black lettering to upper covers and spines, black ties (some fading, rubbing to spine ends). Note: a scarce complete run of this bi-annual work containing art and designs by Raol Dufy, Frans Masereel, Le Corbusier, J.E. Ruhlmann, Maillol and Pierre Chareau. A compendium of French Art Deco design including interiors, furniture, fabric, glass-ware, porcelain, bookbinding (7).

SOUTH-EAST ASIA. - C.J. KLEINGROTHE. Malay Peninsula. [Medan, Sumatra:? Kleingrothe, 1907?] Oblong (351 x 447mm.) Title, map in colour, 53 loose plates of heliogravures based on photographs by C.J. Kleingrothe. (A corner crease to 1 plate, all 36 Malay states plates have a corner damp stain and marginal ink-stain, a tear with small loss to the title, lacking 8 plates from the 'Penang' series and 9 from the 'Singapore' series.) All contained within the original blue cloth portfolio, white lettering and mounted photographic illustration to the upper cover (some rubbing and damp-spotting). Note: rare. Charles Kleingrothe was a German-born photographer who established a studio Medan, Sumatra in 1899. A variety of images, including a mail-train, golf and race-courses and clubs, but also of tin and gold-mining and rubber plantations.
