A very rare and interesting Banco de Portugal partial banknote die proof engraver's test strike for the obverse of a five hundred escudos note, circa 1987-1994, in brown with portrait of José Xavier Mouzinho da Silveira to centre, value to lower right corner and middle left side, proof on damped baryte paper, moulding press G. Nehls 17.6.87, mounted on card backing (extremely fine). Note: Gunnar Nehls, born in Stockholm in 1955, was an intaglio printmaking artist, portrait engraver and member of the International Banknote Designers Association. He was a teacher of traditional and digital line engraving. Provenance: from the personal archive of the late Alan Dow, master banknote engraver to Bradbury Wilkinson & Co and the Bank of England.
