A rare and striking Banco de Portugal specimen obverse of a one thousand escudos banknote, circa 30th May 1981, in purple on multicoloured underprint with portrait vignette of Queen Filipa de Lancastre to right side, red print 'Specimen' mark to centre and pierced/punched cancellation above, together with a die proof engraver's test strike portrait vignette of Queen Filipa in purple, both loose-mounted part-tacked on paper, one with cut frame (both extremely fine). Provenance: from the personal archive of the late Alan Dow, master banknote engraver to Bradbury Wilkinson & Co and the Bank of England.
