A Full and Genuine History of the Inhuman and Unparalleled Murders of Mr. William Galley, a Custom-House Officer, and Mr. Daniel Chater, a Shoemaker, By Fourteen Notorious Smugglers… Written by a Gentleman of Chichester. Chichester: William Mason, [circa 1801.] Sixth edition, 8vo (179 x 121mm.) 7 engraved plates. (Browning, light spotting and finger-marking, lacking initial blank.) Contemporary half morocco (inner hinge weakened, extremities rubbed, minor loss to spine panel). Note: plates show graphic depictions of the torture and murder of William Galley and Daniel Chater by the notorious Hawkhurst Gang, a group of smugglers who were based in the south-east England from 1735 until 1749 when key members of the group were arrested and executed.
