Note: born in Berkshire of respectable parents who sent him to Westminster school and Eton College, Lieutenant Edward Bird was arrested for murdering a waiter, Samuel Loxton, who had taken too long to run a bath for him at the inn where Edward was lodging. He was convicted on clear evidence and didn’t deny the charge but insisted his lawyer was corrupt and had not worked sufficiently on his defence.
