Note: Anna Seward was known as the ‘Swan of Lichfield’ because of the numerous poetic odes and eulogies she wrote for the recently departed. Indeed, her friend Walter Scott remarked that he could not ignore Seward for ‘fear of my death being prematurely announced by a sonnet or an elegy’.
