LOT 269
Jean Taprell Clark – Studio Contents, an archive comprising oils, sketchbooks, watercolours and lithographs of mainly figurative subjects, collages and works in the manner of Chagall, Note: Jean Patricia Taprell Clark was born in Kingston, Surrey, in January 1930. Having refused the opportunity to become a member of the 'Bluebell Girls' dance group, preferring to become a painter, she went on to study at the Wimbledon School of Art, where she met Raymond Briggs. The couple married in 1963 and later relocated to rural Sussex after Briggs accepted a position as a part-time lecturer in illustration at Brighton Polytechnic Art School. Jean grappled with schizophrenia and agoraphobia, which deeply affected her life. Reflecting on her condition, Briggs wrote, 'Schizophrenics are inspiring people. Her feelings about nature and experiences of life were very intense.' Jean passed away from leukaemia in 1973.
