Note: the inscription reads: ‘On his 75th birthday to my dear old friend, Philip’ [two words illegible]. Also loosely inserted is a card in Roth’s hand to Julius Goldstein: ‘For a dear friend- on his most impressive birthday- love Claire and Philip’. Claire Bloom, actress, was married to Roth from 1990 to 1995. Julius Goldstein was a painter married to the writer, Joan Aiken. Julius and Philip met at the Yaddo artists’ colony in 1964.
