LOT 3141
BOTANY. – Miss [Sarah] SMITH. Studies of Flowers from Nature. Doncaster: Aldwick Hall for the author, [circa 1818.] First edition, folio (380 x 266mm.) Engraved title with hand-coloured vignette, 19 aquatint plates in two states, hand-coloured and uncoloured, letterpress text leaf to each, tissue-guards, 3pp. ‘Subscriber’s List’ and tipped-in errata slip to rear. (Lacking 1 plate, ‘Dahlias’, toning, spotting to tissue-guards only, occasional finger-mark.) Early 20th century half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, two green morocco labels to spine (minor abrasions to boards), near-matching slipcase (extremities rubbed). Note: rare. In his ‘Dictionary’ (vol. 1, p. 35), Burbidge lists a ‘Miss Smith’ who exhibited paintings of fruit at the Royal Academy. He also lists another Miss Smith with a Sheffield address who exhibited fruit pictures at the British Institution around 1842. The book is dedicated to Princess Elizabeth who was herself a keen amateur artist. Provenance: John Grant (pencil name to front pastedown).
