LOT 19
Huber – Orientalist Scene with Camel and Figures in a North African Landscape, 19th century gouache, signed, 24cm x 32cm, within a gilt composition frame. Note: there is considerable conflation in online databases and indices as to which artist with the surname Huber executed North African scenes in gouache signed with the capitalised surname Huber. Most of these works are ascribed to Emil Albert Huber (1883-1943) and Ernst Huber (1895-1960); however, these works do not fit alongside the dates of their birth, or the bulk of their oeuvre. One theory is that these works may have been produced by Carl Rudolf Huber (1839-1896), who in a letter to Rudolph Swoboda stated, ‘When money was running short, I quickly painted some small kitsch things. Thus I could stay for 6 months in Cairo…’.
