MANUSCRIPT. [A diary of an American infantryman, E.J. Anderson of the 139th F.A, stationed in France and covering the last few months of the F.W.W. N.p.:] Sept. 1918-Dec. 1918. 14pp., manuscript, 12mo (148 x 95mm.) Comprising 14pp. of entries in a clearly legible hand describing the movements of the 139th F.A. from America to England and to France, covering the signing of the armistice and witnessing President Wilson's arrival in Brest on the 13th December, to negotiate peace and discuss the creation of a 'League of Nations'. (Toning, finger-marks.) Original card covers (upper cover partially missing). Note: the first entry describes how, prior to landing in France a 'depth bomb was dropped for a submarine following us'. E.J. Anderson then describes the route from Freeport Illinois on 25th May to Liverpool, to Cherbourg, a convoy of '55,000 soldiers'. On 26th October there's a 'wreck on the Etat Railway hauling the 138 F.A. 20 killed and 36 injured. Bodies mangled beyond recognition'. However, Father Finnegan is soon showing them 'points of interest' in the local area, and these are remembered and detailed with some precision. On 7th November there's 'Rumour of Germany surrendering to Wilson'. On the 12th, 'armistice signed 5.40 am. Hostilities ceased 11am' and, a few days later, 'war over, don't give a damn'. On December 13th President Woodrow Wilson arrives in Brest, to a '23-gun salute' which Anderson witnesses, and he notes 'Mrs. Wilson with him and riding in [a] car behind the President. Whole city of Brest turned out for him'. They are 'ordered to leave for home' on the 14th December and the last entry, two days later, notes the 'pleasant and calm sea'.
