A Victorian tortoiseshell veneered and gilt brass mounted bracket clock with eight day triple fusee movement chiming quarters on a nest of eight bells and striking hours on a larger bell, the backplate engraved 'SamL James Stevenage', the similarly signed brass breakarch dial with silvered chime/silent indicator to arch above a silvered chapter ring and recessed signature plaque, framing a matt centre, cornered with pierced and cast scroll spandrels, the case with urn finials above a breakarch glazed front door, the sides with pierced fret panels and handles, flanked by a pair of caryatid and floral columns, on a moulded rectangular base and cast foliate scroll feet, height 55.5cm, with pendulum. Note: Samuel James is a recorded clockmaker working in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, between 1859 and 1874.
