A Swiss .935 silver keyless wind hunting cased gentleman's pocket watch of China Boxer Rebellion interest, the movement signed 'Courvoisier Frères', the turquoise enamelled dial with white hour plaques and black Roman numerals, gilt decoration and subsidiary seconds, the inner case with presentation inscription 'Carl Imlach to D.J. Gowney Pekin Legation 1900', the case front interior with Courvoisier Frères trademark and detailed '0,935', the case with engine turned decoration, case diameter 4.8cm. Note: David James Gowney (1876-1936) was a soldier in the Royal Marines Light Infantry. He remarkably rose from Private to Major during a career spanning 36 years from 1890 (aged 14) until his retirement in 1926. He was promoted to Corporal on 1st July 1898, a rank he served in the Legation Guard, Peking. The Beijing Diplomatic Legation Quarter was besieged by the 'Boxer' rebels from June to August in 1900 and during the fighting he received a wound to his right arm. For his services in China he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM), mentioned in dispatches and promoted to Sergeant. He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) for his services during the First World War and promoted to Major for meritorious services in the field during the war.
