LOT 87
George Romney - Study of a Seated Lady, 18th century pen and brush with ink over pencil on laid paper, 20.5cm x 19cm, within a gilt frame. Note: this composition was inspired by the 'Weeping Dacia' sculptural relief now in the Capitoline Museum, Rome, and formed a reference point for many of Romney's 50| x 40| portraits of women in the late 1770s, such as the portrait of Mrs John Birch now in the collection of the Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona, USA. We are grateful to Alex Kidson for confirming the attribution to Romney as well as his help in the cataloguing of this lot.
