Note: in the preface, Richard Fountain - who was lecturer in Modern European History at the London Academy- writes that he was initially inspired to create a work for students of German history because he realised that Bernadotte E. Schmitt's influential essay 'Triple Alliance and Triple Entente' had not been published in this country. With some amendments, he typed it out, but the work soon expanded to include his own essays and transcriptions of recordings (2).
