BINDING. - John MILTON. Paradise Lost. A Poem in Twelve Books… with Notes of various Authors, by Thomas Newton, D.D. London: for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper, 1749. 2 vols., new edition, 4to (278 x 205mm.) 2 engraved portrait frontispieces by G. Vertue and 12 engraved plates after F. Hayman, 12pp. 'List of the Subscribers' in volume 1, 'Index' at rear of volume 2. (Toning, some offsetting of plates, later tissue-guards to frontispieces bound-in, blanks replaced.) Early 20th century cream vellum bound by Chas E. Lauriat with an Art Nouveau gilt rosette decoration, two red and one brown original morocco lettering pieces to the spines, floral gilt turn-ins with dots and inner dentelle, g.e. (endpapers replaced).
