HERBAL. - Thomas VICARY. The Englishman's Treasure, With the True Anatomie of Mans Body… whereunto are annexed many Secrets appertaining to Chyrurgerie, with divers excellent approved Remedies for all Captaines and Souldiers, that travel either by Water or Land. London: by B. Alsop, and Thomas Favvcet, 1641. 4to (175 x 123mm.) Black letter, woodcut frontispiece, decorative and inhabited woodcut initials, and head and tail-pieces. (Leaves T2-T3 replaced in facsimile, paper repairs to two initial blanks, marginal damp-staining Q1-R1 and to margins of rear leaves, closed marginal tear to Kk4, occasional browning, marginal paper repair to last leaf Rr2, ink annotation to fourth blank and last leaf, history of the books repair in ink to rear pastedown.) Mid-20th century brown calf, original calf laid-on to both covers (endpapers replaced). Note: Thomas Vicary was an early English physician, described as 'but a meane practiser in Maidstone… that had gained his knowledge by experience, until the King advanced him for curing his sore leg'. Provenance: William Hoar (name inscribed on first blank); Richard Hoar (name inscribed to fourth blank); Thomas Hoar (gift inscribed to on the fourth blank).
