LOT 360
An 18th century silver peg tankard, probably Scandinavian, of cylindrical form, chased with three foliate sprays divided by three claw and ball feet, flanked by a scroll handle, the interior fitted with four pegs, the domed hinged lid chased with a border of flowers and engraved inscription 'W 74½… Olli Jonsen Aambug, Ingebor Ols Datter Aambug 1797', all framing an inset Spanish Charles IV eight reales coin 1795, 'JJ' monogram maker's mark to base, weight 1074g, height 23cm. Note: peg tankards have a long history in Scandinavian countries and Northern Europe. The name is derived from a vertical row of pegs soldered to the inside of the tankard, used to measure the amount of alcohol drunk as it is passed around the table.
