LOT 3099
BOER WAR. - George Warrington STEEVENS. The Ladysmith Lyre. [South Africa:] 1899. Vol. 1, 3 issues (numbers 2,3, and 4), folio (420 x 302mm.) 4 sheets with cartoons, satirical poems and sketches. (Two of the sheets are torn in half, numbers 2 and 3, marginal losses, chipping and creasing.) Disbound. Note: Number 1 comprises 2 sheets. The Ladymith Lyre was created by Daily Mail war correspondent George 'G.W.' Steevens at the start of the siege of Ladysmith as a way of maintaining the morale of the British soldiers. The siege lasted 118 days, from November 2nd until February 28th. Steevens didn't survive to see the relief of the city. He died of typhoid on 15th January, 1900, the Boers having taken control of the water supply.
