A George III mahogany bracket clock, the brass twin fusee movement with verge escapement chiming quarters on six bells and striking hours on a larger bell, the backplate with floral and scroll engraved decoration, the 7¾-inch brass breakarch dial with silvered strike/silent indicator to arch above a silvered chapter ring, the matt gilt centre with date aperture and recessed silvered plaque, inscribed 'Gravell & Tolkien London' and numbered '2610', all cornered with cast and pierced gilt foliate spandrels, the case with pad top and brass carrying handle above a moulded arch pediment, glazed doors and pierced brass scale fret panels to sides, on a moulded rectangular base and brass bracket feet, height 45cm, with winder. Note: the partnership of William Gravell & John Benjamin Tolkien took over the business of Eardley Norton on his death in 1792 and continued working from St John Street, London, until 1820. John Benjamin Tolkien is believed to be the great great grandfather of 'The Lord of the Rings' author J.R.R. Tolkien.
