A mid to late 19th century lacquered brass grande sonnerie carriage alarm clock with eight day movement striking and repeating on two gongs, the circular enamel dial with black Roman hour numerals and outer Arabic minutes above subsidiary alarm dial with Arabic numerals, within a matt gilt surround, the gorge case with bevelled glass panels and swing handle, the oval escapement glass with engraved monogram, the underside with three position setting lever for 'Gde Sonnerie', 'Silence' and 'Hres et Quarts', height including handle 18.4cm, together with original replaced platform escapement and leather travelling case, initialled 'E.R.'. Note: the E.R. initial to outer case is purportedly that of a member of the Rothschild family; the current vendor's grandfather worked as an agent for the Rothschilds and it is believed that this carriage clock was given as a gift.
