An early 20th brass circular cased aneroid wall barometer, the printed ceramic dial inscribed 'Whyte Thomson & Co Glasgow', the cylinder case with oak backplate surmounted with a brass anchor, the reverse applied with a brass plaque, inscribed 'Souvenir of Captain Fryatt's Boat. S.S Brussels. Sunk 31st August 1919. The Mole. Zeebrugge', height 46.5cm (glass cracked). Note: Charles Algernon Fryatt (1872-1916) was a British Merchant Navy captain; commanding the S.S. Brussels on the 28th March 1915, whilst under attack from a German U-boat, Fryatt attempted to ram the U-boat. He was later captured by the Germans in June 1916. As a non-combatant involved in a hostile action, he was tried and immediately executed by firing squad in Bruges on the 27th July 1916. His execution caused an international outcry.
