LOT 127
Studio of Jean Baptiste Monnoyer - Still Life of Fruit and Flowers resting on a Stone Ledge with a Monkey and a Parrot, 17th century oil on canvas, 152cm x 125.5cm, within a gilt composition frame. Note: this painting corresponds to two other variants by Monnoyer: variant 1, near identical, was sold at Sotheby's London on the 10th May 1967 and purchased by the art dealer Bernard Cohen; variant 2, the parrot replaced by a dog, was presented at Sotheby's New York on 23rd May 2001 (the Sotheby's catalogue description when referring to variant 1 mistakenly described the dog as having been replaced by a monkey rather than by a parrot). Variant 2 was formerly retailed by art dealer Maurice Segoura in 1978. It has been suggested that these variants were produced whilst the artist was living in England, where he was commissioned for a series of canvasses for Lord Carlisle at Burlington House and Lord Montagu for Boughton House.
