JONSTONE, John. Historia Naturalis de Piscibus et Cetis, Libri V. Frankfurt: Matthaus Merian, [n.d. but 1649.] Two parts in 1 volume, first editions, folio (325 x 194mm.) Engraved decorative title-page, engraved initials and headpieces, Libri IV with separate title-page 'Historia Naturalis de Exanguibus Aquaticis' dated 1650, 47 engraved plates in Libri V, and 21 engraved plates in Libri IV, 1p. index to rear, plate 2 in Libri IV in two variants. (Spotting and browning to margins, ink annotation to margin of the beached whale plate, 1 plate re-inserted, pagination mistake at f1 but text complete.) Contemporary vellum (soiled). Note: contains a plate of a Merman and Mermaid and also the well-known plate of the beached whale. Comprising two of the six parts of Jonstone's Natural History.
