LOT 1183
A George V South Eastern Railway oak cased drop dial wall timepiece with eight day chain driven single fusee movement, the backplate inscribed 'J. Smith & Sons Clerkenwell' and dated '1917', the 12-inch painted circular dial with black Roman hour numerals and inscribed 'S.E.R. 1701', with cast brass bezel and glass within a moulded surround, the bowed apron with trap door, the side door interior applied with brass 'S.E. 1701' plaque, the case back stamped '1701 SE', height 50.5cm, the brass pendulum, numbered '1701'. Note: John Smith & Sons are recorded London clockmakers working in St John's Square, Clerkenwell, from circa 1844 to the mid-20th century. Provenance: there is an entry for this clock, No. 1701, in South Eastern Railway records held at the Railway Museum, which states that this clock was at Redhill Station until withdrawn from use.
