MANUSCRIPT. An early typed draft by Clemence Dane of the film script for 'Jamaica Inn', directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, 188pp. dated 1st July 1938, leaves 32.5cm x 20cm, and typed on recto with 1p. hand-drawn plan of 'Jamaica Inn'. Note: 'Clemence Dane' was the pseudonym of Winifred Ashton, screenwriter and novelist. Winifred had written the screenplay for 'Anna Karenina' starring Greta Garbo in 1935. However, she wasn't credited with the writing of 'Jamaica Inn'. The writing was attributed to Joan Harrison, Sidney Gilliat, Alma Reville and J.B. Priestley. Starring Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara the film was released in 1939. Soon afterwards Hitchcock left for America but was to direct two more films based on the work of du Maurier. Provenance: by family repute, from the estate of Marius Goring, actor. Together with a further typed and bound screenplay by Clemence Dane and Sergei Nolbandov ('Kean').
