AYRTON, Michael. - William GOLDING. The Hot Gates. London: Faber and Faber, 1965. First edition, 8vo (218 x 133mm.) (Mild toning.) Original red cloth (bumped to extremities), in a Michael Ayrton designed dust-jacket (creasing to spine ends). - And a small archive of material relating to Michael Ayrton (including 'A Question of Mirrors', 1975, disbound). Note: 'A Question of Mirrors' is a photocopy of a transcript of a television broadcast relating to Ayrton's lifelong interest in mirrors and mirrors in art. The transcript contains a reference to the year 1975, suggesting that Ayrton was working on this project at the time of his death, in November of that year. The archive also contains eighteen volumes that were illustrated by Ayrton, or have Ayrton-illustrated dust-jackets. There are also numerous photographs of his artworks and miscellaneous material containing reference to him and an unpublished 'Catalogue of Art' complied by Ayrton collector, and actor, Andrew Burt. This catalogue lists 316 items of Ayrton's work, with colour photographic illustrations and the auction price paid.
