STEDMAN, John Gabriel. Narrative of a Five Years Expedition, against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the Wild Coast of South America, from the year 1772 to 1777. London: J. Johnson and J. Edwards, 1796. 2 vols., first edition, 4to (263 x 201mm.) Frontispiece, title vignette to each volume, 80 engraved plates by William Blake and Bartolozzi and others, including 4 folding, 4pp. index and 1p. errata leaf to rear of each volume. (Occasional minor spotting, mainly to plate margins, tear to p.87 of volume 2.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, spines rubbed, tape reinforcement to hinges). Note: Stedman was part of an expedition sent out to subdue a slave rebellion in Dutch Guiana, but he was horrified by the treatment he saw. This work, with some shocking illustrations which Blake designed and engraved sixteen, was embraced by the Abolitionist movement. Provenance: Admiral Bonham (bookplates to the front pastedowns); Henry Bonham (ink name to titles). - And with a further copy of volume 1 of the same work (3).
