ART HISTORY. - Jacob BURCKHARDT. The Cicerone: or, Art Guide to Painting in Italy. London: John Murray, 1873. First edition, 8vo (173 x 117mm.) Index of painters to rear, 4pp. of publisher's advertisements. (Mild toning.) Original red cloth, gilt lettering to upper cover and spine (lightly rubbed to extremities). Note: scarce. Influential in evolving the study of history to include a society's art and culture, Burckhardt was possibly the first to use the word 'modernity' in an academic context and, in this book, he gave the Victorians a guide book to Italian art to accompany them and their Baedeckers on the Grand Tour. - And four further travel related volumes (including Bradhsaw's 'Hand-Book to Brittany', [1868], 8vo) (5).
