LOT 1860
A Greek terracotta antefix, probably 4th century BC, the arched front decorated in high relief with the head of a goddess with horns and long strands of curly hair, partially covered in a white slip, the reverse with remnants of rounded fixing, height 21cm, width 20.2cm (loss to lower corner and other minor faults), later mounted on an early 20th century walnut stand, bearing paper label to underside. Note: an antefix is a vertical block which terminates the covering tiles of a tiled roof. Provenance: the label to the base of the stand and repute would suggest that this piece was originally found by the British archaeologist William Matthew Flinders Petrie on an archaeological expedition in Asia Minor and later given to Sir Frank Markham by Sir Henry Alexander Miers.
