LOT 4071
Eric Gill A.R.A. - a Hopton Wood stone frieze section, carved in the Ditchling workshop, worked with a central cross flanked by a plain moulding and trellis band, height 15.5cm, length 174.8cm (broken in two). Note: this frieze is similar to that on the VI Station of the Cross 'Jesus and Veronica' at the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral, London. This carved stone section was intended to be used at Westminster Cathedral but was broken in transport, so Gill used it as part of the chimneypiece at Woodbarton. Provenance: removed from Woodbarton, Ditchling, East Sussex, the house designed by Eric Gill for his associate Desmond Chute.
