POLAR. - William Henry MAY. Memoirs. London and Beccles: for private circulation by William Clowes and Sons, [n.d. but circa 1930]. 8vo (217 x 134mm.) Numerous plates laid-in. (Moderate spotting to first and last leaves.) Original blue morocco, gilt lettering to upper cover, g.e. (light rubbing to extremities). Note: scarce, only two copies are recorded on Copac. Sir William May took part in the unsuccessful expedition to the North Pole of 1875 working as a navigating officer under Sir George Nares and Alfred Markham on H.M.S. Alert. This book contains a 10pp. description of that expedition. - And a 'Certificate For Wounds and Hurts', dated 7th September 1876, detailing how William May suffered frost bite on-board H.M.S. Alert which necessitated amputation of the 'left great toe' on the 11th November the preceding year. It is also signed by Georges Nares and the witness to 'the accident', Alfred Markham. Also includes a number of cartes-de-visite photographs relating to William May and his family (a group).
