SHAKESPEARE, William. The Works of William Shakespeare, edited by Howard Staunton. London: Routledge, Warne & Routledge, 1864. 4 vols., 8vo (211 x 129mm.) (Mild toning.) Contemporary red half-morocco, five raised bands to spine, gilt lettering to the second and fourth compartments, repeating decorative gilt to the rest, g.e. (some fading to spines, rubbing to extremities). Note: after retiring, the greatest English chess player of the 1840's, Howard Staunton, turned his hand to editing Shakespeare's plays. Provenance: J.R.R. (gilt monogram and insignia to upper covers) (4).
