The inscription reads 'á mon tres tres cher ami, Signor Morgano Forstano, SRM'. The inscription was written by Syed Ross Masood, Forster's first love. Syed always told Forster that one day he would write a book about India. Forster demurred for a long time. Eventually, when Passage to India was published, he dedicated it to Syed.
