LOT 3069
BIBLE, In English. [Conteyning the Old Testament and the New. N.p. but London: Robert Barker, n.d. but 1611]. First edition, first issue ('he'). Apocrypha only [lacking the Old and New Testament]. Folio, (420 x 269mm.) Black letter, double-column, 103 leaves, engraved 5-line decorative initials, ornaments, 59 lines per leaf, italicised annotation within borders, signatures Jjjj5-Ccccc6. (Lacking one leaf Jjjj4, damp-staining Jjjj5-Nnnn2, thereafter to margins, minor soiling, loss to corner of Oooo4 affecting 2 lines, repair to last leaf Ccccc6 and corner loss.) Old boards rebacked in calf (heavily rubbed). Note: Herbert 309 notes that the 1611, 1613, 1617, 1634 and 1640 editions of the King James Bible closely resemble one another and that the 'intricate typographical differences are discussed at length' in Francis Fry's book, 'Description of the Great Bible 1539 and the Six editions…(1865). Fry distinguishes the editions by comparing the decorative initials, referencing plate 47 with 43, 44, 45. Enclosed within this edition of the 'Apocrypha' are photocopies of these relevant pages from the Fry book. The 'Apocrypha' was not considered to be inspired scripture and so was often bound separately, especially after the Protestant Reformation. The publisher's, for their part, were keen to publish the Bible without this intersectional part because it was cheaper to do so. Provenance: William Ireton Stewart (name in ink to front board).
