LOT 3247
TRAVEL. A cloth-bound journal by an unidentified female hand, giving a perceptive account of a trip through Egypt, dated November 1879 to March 1880, approximately 113pp., leaves 20.5cm x 16cm (binding affected by damp). Note: the journal gives long descriptions of the famous sites and antiquites, as well as a commentary on local life, she describes the squalor of Cairo 'children and adults alike arrayed in the filthiest garments hardly enough to cover their nakedness', she was disgusted by the lacking nose of the Sphinx 'it is a pity that a barbarian of the 19th century, said to be a Yankee has forever mutilated the Sphinx', and is less than impressed by a display of native dancing 'His dancing chiefly consisted in shaking about his hind quarters in an extraordinary manner & he finished up with flinging off all his clothes, except a pair of drawers, uncovering even his bald head. Verdict. Not nice'.
