EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED. - Charles DICKENS. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. 2 vols., first edition in book form, early printing, 8vo (212 x 122mm.) 43 plates by 'Phiz' and Robert Seymour, including the 2 suppressed plates by R.W. Buss and extra-illustrated with 32 plates by Thomas Onwhyn. (Spotting and browning to the plates and moderately to the text, lacking half-title.) Late 19th century blue calf, double fillet borders with elaborate floral corners in gilt to upper and lower covers, four raised bands to the spines, lettering pieces to the second and third compartments, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (rubbing to extremities, some surface scuffing.) Note: the Thomas Onwhyn plates, also of 1837, are signed in the name of 'Sam Weller', a character in the novel. They were published by E. Gratton and are captioned with excerpts from the text.
