GUATEMALA. An interesting archive of letters from Ollie H. Skelton to his parents, circa 1934-1941, concerning his travel and employment in Guatemala and Bermuda, the majority relating to his time at coffee and fruit plantations, including Finca Helvetia, Finca Mocá, Finca El Zapote and with the Compania Agricola de Guatemala, discussing the country, landscape, people, the economic climate 'it promises to be a heavy crop... nevertheless economic conditions have just about reached rock-bottom in this part of the world', local life and customs 'after devil-chasing began to pall, they all drifted down to the cantina and put themselves into a trance of blissful oblivion with a glass of white-eye or rot-gut... this vicious drink is the most potent filth made' and even a small earthquake in March 1935, a few letters have marginal drawings and the archive also includes three manuscript maps, eleven pen and ink drawings and a few prints, all by Skelton.
