[CAVE, Edward.] 'Sylvanus URBAN'. The Gentleman's Magazine… and Historical Chronicle. London: D. Henry et al, 1731-1858. 176 vols. 8vo (214 x 120mm.) Numerous engraved plates and maps (many folding, some hand-coloured). (Occasional repairs to some maps, light browning, lacking the 'Declaration of Independence' and possibly a few other maps and plates.) Contemporary half-calf (39) (rubbing to spine ends, some soiling), modern cloth (134) (replaced endpapers), variant leather bindings (3). Provenance: Worthing Public Library (labels to front pastedowns). Note: a complete run (1731- 1843) of this important monthly periodical that covered an extensive range of 18th and 19th century European and imperial life and culture including plates and maps from North and South America, West Indies, the Antarctic, Africa, Prussia and covering subjects such as astronomy, art, poetry, politics, natural history, history, slavery, canals, bridges, architecture, war (American and European frontier maps), inventions (the 'self-moving wheel') and coats of arms. Including, for example, a folding map of the 'Caribbee Islands' (1756), the 'Atlantic Ocean' (1754), 'South America' (1749), 'East Indies' (1748), 'Philadelphia' (1752) and the four folding maps of America from 1776 ('Philadelphia', 'Long Island', 'Rhode Island' and 'New Jersey'). - And a run of three volumes (1856-1858) and also a single volume (Benjamin Nangle's 'The Gentleman's Magazine…an Index of Biographical and Obituary Notices', 1980, 8vo (177).
