LOT 1055
Lai Fong of Calcutta - a China trade painting, signed and dated 1893, depicting the iron ship 'Phasis' in full sail with middle mast flying the Golden Fleece pendant and British Ensign flying from the rear mast, oil on canvas, signed 'Lai Fong Calcutta 1893' in iron red to lower right corner, 63.5cm x 89cm, within an oak frame. Note: the Phasis was an iron three masted ship built in 1880 by Barclay, Curle & Co Glasgow. It was a member of the Golden Fleece line and was wrecked on Royal Charlotte shoal, Labuan, in 1897. Lai Fong was one of a group of Chinese marine painters who worked for Oriental trade merchants and captains. While most of these artists worked out of Canton, Whampoa, Hong Kong or Shanghai, Lai Fong worked outside of China in the Indian port of Calcutta.
