A Victorian Irish silver presentation trowel, inscribed 'With This Trowel Sir Robert Kane laid the First Stone of The Museum of Irish Industry 26th Febry 1849', framed by an engraved band of shamrocks, the bog oak handle carved with further shamrocks, Dublin 1848 by John Smyth, length 34.5cm. Note: Sir Robert John Kane (1809-1890) was an Irish chemist and educator; his work on Irish industry led to his being appointed Director of the Museum of Irish industry in Dublin in 1845.
