LOT 2035
An unusual early 20th century Queen Anne style walnut extending dining table, stamped Gillows, the crossbanded circular top with a 'capstan' expanding mechanism, the top of the frieze inlaid with numerical labels corresponding to the spare leaf segments, contained within a separate cabinet, raised on shell-carved cabriole legs with pad feet, height 77cm, diameter closed 136cm, diameter with small leaves 158cm, diameter with large leaves 184cm. Note: the expanding mechanism within this table is a version first patented by Robert Jupe in 1835. It would appear that this mechanism was adopted by Gillows after expiry of the patent, perhaps during the third quarter of the 19th century, and used well into the 20th century.
