A mid-18th century French surveying compass by Jacques Canivet, the printed paper circular dial inscribed 'Canivet Paris', with half blued-steel needle and jewelled centre, framed by a silvered circumference scale, glazed with retaining spring, the walnut case counter signed on an inset brass plate 'Canivet à la Sphére à Paris', with pivoted side sight and sliding cover.
