PLATO. Dialogues of Plato [translated by Floyer Sydenham]. London: W. Sandby, 1759-1779. 11 parts only (of 13) in 4 vols., 4to (284 x 220mm.) 1 folding plate, 1 folding table. (Occasional spotting, 1 leaf with minor marginal tear to vol. III.) Contemporary speckled calf (slightly rubbed and scuffed, joints splitting, spines darkened). Note: Floyer Sydenham (1710-1787) was a Greek scholar and a Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, who devoted himself to translating the works of Plato. His translations of the 'Dialogues' were the first English translations of most of them; they were first published separately and subsequently collected, and are not commonly found complete. This collection comprises: 'A Synopsis', 'Greater Hippias', 'Lesser Hippias', 'The Banquet, first part', 'Meno', 'First Alcibiades', 'The Rivals', 'Philebus, the first part', 'Second Alcibiades', 'Io' and 'Doctrine of Heraclitus'.
