A Chinese famille rose enamelled armorial porcelain tankard, Qianlong period, of cylindrical form, the front painted and gilt with the Arms of Stephens (or Steevens) of Colchester and Arden in Essex, flanked by flower sprays beneath a red and gilt chain border, height 14cm, together with a matching saucer dish, pair of octagonal plates and a pair of octagonal soup plates (plates and dish with repairs, cracks and chips). Note: a similarly decorated plate is illustrated on page 559 of 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain' by David Sanctuary Howard, where it states 'the service may have been made for Captain William Steevens of The East Indiaman Delaware, at Canton in 1748'.
